The Proposal

It was February 11, 2011 and Christian was flying in and I was super excited to see him.  Unfortunately his flight was delayed.  He never has good luck flying here, something inevitably goes wrong.  So, his flight was delayed and he didn’t get in until around 9 pm after which I was exhausted.  He arrived and the plan was to go get dessert at a restaurant called “The Roof” at Temple Square, but I was too tired so we skipped it.  (For the record, I suggested to LaNova for two whole days prior to my visit that she should rest up, prepare, do the laundry BEFORE the last minute.  After all, chance favors the prepared mind.)

The next day we had plans to have lunch with my aunt Kathleen and then head down to Temple Square and play tourist.  Well, we picked up my aunt and during lunch she asked what we were doing the rest of the day.  Christian told her and then invited her to come along.  She did and we all enjoyed a fun day at Temple Square.  (We had a fantastic time, by the way!)  On our way back to my aunt’s house I started to develop a really bad headache.  (Who hasn't heard that one before???)  It persisted and we dropped her off and Christian asked if we could stop by Little Cottonwood Canyon so he could take a picture of the place where he had our first date.  I said we could and drove there since it was just up the road.  When we got there, the trail was gated off.  I forgot that in the winter they close the trail.  He asked if we could park somewhere else or get in somewhere else so we drove around but there wasn’t a place to park so I pulled off the side of the road across from the entrance and said he could jump out to take his picture.  He wanted me to go with him, but I told him I couldn’t leave the car unattended on the side of the road.  (Really?  On such a remote road?  It would take the cops at least 4 hours to even notice, let alone ticket!)  He gave up the quest and said we could just go back to my apartment.  By now my head was pounding and all I wanted to do was go to sleep since we had plans later that night with friends. (Again, this would probably have been mitigated had someone, who shall remain nameless, simply gone to bed on time before the visit!)

I dove back to my apartment and was taking off my shoes and putting them away when he told me to close my eyes and sit on the bed.  I thought he was going to rub my shoulders or something to ease the pain in my head.  But no.  With my eyes still closed, he kneeled down in front of me and said I could open my eyes.  When I did, he had the ring and sweetly asked me if I would marry him.  I was shocked!  I didn’t expect the proposal so soon.  I mean, I expected it was coming any day and secretly hoped it wouldn’t be on Valentine’s Day, but I was totally surprised.  I said “Yes, of course!” and he kissed me and we were ENGAGED!!!

And then I fell asleep.

The whole thing may have been a bit anti-climactic, but...I'm ok with it.  So, lesson to all those of you out there in school...DON'T PROCRASTINATE!  Do your homework and go to bed.  You never know when you might have an opportunity to be proposed to on The Roof of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
