Meeting of the parents

This whole relationship has been quite unusual to begin with.  (HA!)  Since my parents were on an LDS mission in South Africa, there wasn’t anyway they could actually meet Christian.  He sent an email introducing himself to my parents and they emailed a couple of times.  Once when I was visiting him in California, we set up a time to “skype” with my parents now that the relationship was more serious.

Saying the meeting over Skype was uncomfortable is a total understatement.  (They don't have words in the English dictionary to describe how awkward it is to meet a girl's parents via Skype!!!)  I was so nervous and didn’t know what to say to my parents.  I kept looking at the computer screen instead of the camera; I felt I looked funny on screen.  Boy, it was tough.  So kids, make every effort to introduce your boyfriend or girlfriend to your parents in person, it may be awkward but it’s even more so when done through a computer.

MEETING HIS PARENTS

I flew down to LA and Christian and I drove up to Petaluma, CA to meet his parents.  It was a long drive.  We didn’t get there until around midnight and his parents had stayed up waiting for us.  We waked in and his mom came out and we said hi and she gave me a hug.  I was surprised, but I liked it.  His dad came in and there was some chit chat and we took our bags to our room.  I got a chance to look at his bedroom.  There were all sorts of things on the walls, pictures, comics, pole vaulting stuff, eagle scout stuff, favorite blankets and old clothes.

It was fun to see his room.  I stayed in his sister’s room which was bigger and very comfortable.

The next morning, we woke up and ate breakfast in our pajamas.  The strange thing about meeting the family and parents is that I never felt nervous or anxious.  For some reason it has always felt that it was the most normal thing to do.  What are you doing this weekend LaNova?  Oh, Christian and I are headed up to Petaluma to hang out with the fam.  It feels as if it’s something we’ve always done.

Needless to say, the Loraine family is super nice and I was at ease and comfortable the whole visit.  So when people ask me how it went meeting his parents, I always answer, “Normal.”
